Apple Intelligence was built by Apple, and the reason it exists is spelled out right on apple.com: AI that's "integrated into your apps, grounded in your context, and private at every step." There's no scrappy founder story here. It's a platform owner betting that an assistant that already knows your photos, messages, notes and inbox will beat a smarter chatbot that knows none of it. That's the whole pitch, and it's a different bet from the one OpenAI or Google are making.

The centerpiece is Siri AI, a rebuilt Siri that you can type or talk to naturally. It handles open-ended questions and back-and-forth brainstorming, but the more interesting part is personal context: Apple says you can find "a photo from years ago," locate "an email buried in your inbox," or pull details from a saved note just by asking. It can also take actions in Messages, Music and Reminders, like editing a message you just sent or adding a song you heard in the car to your workout playlist. A new dedicated Siri app keeps your conversations in one place, so you can start on iPhone and pick up on iPad. Around that, Visual Intelligence works through the camera and screenshots on iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro, and the Photos app gets Spatial Reframing, Extend and an enhanced Clean Up tool.

The honest take: if you live on Apple hardware, this is the most context-aware assistant you can get without wiring up integrations yourself, and it's listed as free. But the rollout is English-only for now, Apple repeats "usage limits may apply" across several features without saying what those limits are, and the marketing page is light on specifics like device compatibility. You'll find out the real boundaries after you update, not before.
