Artbreeder
Collaborative AI image creation.
About Artbreeder
Artbreeder didn't start as an image generator in the Midjourney sense. It began as Ganbreeder, an experiment by Joel and Studio Morphogen in using breeding and collaboration to explore what the site calls "high complexity spaces." The name is a nod to Picbreeder, a research project that looked at the role of exploration in optimization, and the about page says it was also inspired by Joel's earlier project, Facebook Graffiti, which showed the creative capacity of crowds. That history explains the product: you're meant to wander, mix and build on other people's images, not just type a prompt and hope.
The community idea isn't marketing copy either. The about page credits specific contributors. Gwern made the anime image model. Peter Baylies made the painting model. Alex Reben built the dataset for the albums model, Max Hawkins made the Artbreeder Bot, and Arfa and Xander contributed the furry and science bio art models. The original engine runs on Generative Adversarial Networks, specifically BigGAN and StyleGAN, and there's a minimal open source version built on BigGAN if you want to look under the hood. Early backers included Stochastic Labs, DeepAI and TensorFlow.
The current product has moved past its GAN roots. The pricing page sells credits measured in SDXL images and highlights tools like Composer and Splicer. Paid plans start at $8.99/mo, or $7.49/mo if you pay yearly for 1,200 credits. Our take: Artbreeder is a good fit if you like finding an image through iteration and remixing rather than prompt engineering. The catch is that the public documentation is thin and the about page reads like it was written in the Ganbreeder era, so you'll learn most of what the current tools do by signing up and poking around.
Key features
Breeding and remixing
Artbreeder grew out of Ganbreeder's idea of breeding images together, so you explore by mixing and iterating on existing results instead of starting from a blank prompt every time.
Community-built models
Several models were made by named community members, including Gwern's anime model, Peter Baylies' painting model and Alex Reben's albums dataset.
Composer
Composer is the tool Pro plans call out by name, and paying members get unlimited image generation in it.
Splicer with fast mode
Splicer is one of Artbreeder's original creation tools, and Pro plans add a fast mode for quicker rendering.
Google Drive sync and privacy controls
Pro members can sync work to Google Drive and get privacy controls, which matters on a platform built around sharing and collaboration.
Open source GAN version
A minimal open source version built on BigGAN is available, so you can study or tinker with the original approach outside the hosted app.
Best for
- artists who prefer exploring and remixing over writing prompts
- hobbyists who want anime, painting or furry styles from community models
- creators who generate a lot of images and want a low per-image cost
- people curious about GAN-based generation who want an open source starting point
Skip if
- teams that need detailed documentation before buying, since public material about the current tools is sparse
- anyone who needs private work by default on the free tier, since privacy controls are listed as a Pro benefit
- people who want a simple monthly price without thinking about credits, since every paid plan is metered in credits
Pros & cons
Pros
- The origin as Ganbreeder gives it a different creative loop: you breed and remix images instead of only prompting from scratch
- Credits get cheaper as you go up, from $0.07 per credit on Starter to $0.04 on Champion
- Even the Starter plan's 1,200 yearly credits work out to roughly 12,000 SDXL images, according to the pricing page
- Pro includes unlimited image generation in Composer, so heavy Composer use doesn't eat your credits
- Real community contributions, like Gwern's anime model, give it styles that feel less generic than a single house model
Cons
- Documentation is sparse. The about page still describes the BigGAN and StyleGAN era, and details on newer tools only surface after signup
- The free tier shows ads, and features like privacy controls and Google Drive sync are locked behind Pro
- Credit math adds friction: plans are priced yearly in credits, so you have to work out how many images you'll really make
- The open source version is described as minimal and BigGAN-only, so it doesn't match what the hosted app does today

Frequently asked questions
Who made Artbreeder?
Artbreeder was created by Joel and Studio Morphogen. It started out as Ganbreeder, and its name comes from the Picbreeder research project.
How much does Artbreeder cost?
There's a free tier, and paid plans start at $8.99/mo. Billed yearly, Starter is $7.49/mo for 1,200 credits, Advanced is $15.99/mo for 3,300 credits, and Champion is $30.99/mo for 8,400 credits.
What AI models does Artbreeder use?
The original tool runs on GANs, specifically BigGAN and StyleGAN, and the pricing page now measures credits in SDXL images. Community models include an anime model by Gwern and a painting model by Peter Baylies.
How is Artbreeder different from Midjourney?
Midjourney is built around writing a prompt and getting a polished result. Artbreeder's roots are in breeding and remixing images collaboratively, so it suits exploration more than one-shot prompting.
Is Artbreeder open source?
Only partly. A minimal open source version based on BigGAN is available, but the hosted app at artbreeder.com, with Composer and Splicer, isn't open source.
