ClipDrop
AI image suite by Stability AI.
About ClipDrop
ClipDrop didn't start as a corporate side project. It came out of InitML, a company co-founded in 2020 by Cyril Diagne, Jonathan Blanchet and Damien Henry, three people with deep roots at Google Arts & Culture. Diagne was an artist-in-residence there and worked on the Google Art Selfie. Henry ran innovation and co-created Google Cardboard. Blanchet spent years at Google working where web tech meets image ML. They went through Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch, raised $1.5M, and shipped Cleanup.pictures and ClipDrop. Then the ownership story got busy: Stability bought InitML in February 2023, and Jasper.ai acquired it in February 2024. Blanchet is now VP of engineering at Jasper, and Henry moved from Stability to Jasper as SVP of product.
That background shows in the product. ClipDrop is a set of single-purpose image tools that each do one job: Remove background, Cleanup (object, person and defect removal via inpainting), Image upscaler (2x or 4x on free, up to x16 on Pro), Relight, Uncrop, Text remover, Replace background, Universal Resizer for social formats, and Text to image. You upload, it processes, you download. There's no canvas or layers to learn, and the commercial-use terms don't restrict what you do with generated images.
The free tier is genuinely useful for occasional work. You get 20 runs per 24 hours on background removal, Cleanup, Relight and the 2x upscaler, plus 50 text removals a day. Pro starts at $9/mo and raises those caps to 1,000 per day, adds high-resolution output and lets you skip the queue. If you're a developer, the Jasper-run API offers usage-based pricing so you can bolt background removal or other models into your own product. The real question for you isn't quality, which has a strong reputation, it's whether you're comfortable building on a tool that has changed owners twice in about a year.
Key features
Remove background
It extracts the main subject from a photo and lets you download the HD result for free from clipdrop.co/remove-background.
Cleanup
Its inpainting algorithm removes objects, people, text and defects after you select them, with 20 free runs every 24 hours.
Image upscaler
You can upscale images 2x on the free plan or up to x16 on Pro, with noise reduction and detail recovery built in.
Relight, Uncrop and Replace background
These tools let you add new lighting, extend a photo into a different aspect ratio, or drop your subject into an entirely new scene.
Universal Resizer and Text remover
The resizer reformats images for any social platform, and the text remover strips text from images with a free allowance of 50 per day.
API and Photoshop plugin
Developers get a usage-based API for background removal and other models, and designers can install ClipDrop plugins to use it from inside Adobe Photoshop.
Best for
- e-commerce sellers cutting out product shots
- social media managers resizing assets for multiple platforms
- marketers who need quick object removal without Photoshop skills
- developers adding background removal to their own app via API
Skip if
- designers who need layered, multi-step editing in one canvas, since each ClipDrop tool is a separate one-shot step
- teams processing large batches on the free plan, because most tools cap at 20 runs per 24 hours
- anyone who needs long-term vendor stability guarantees, given the product changed owners in 2023 and again in 2024
Pros & cons
Pros
- The free tier gives you HD background removal plus 20 daily runs on Cleanup, Relight and the 2x upscaler, which covers most casual needs
- Pro at $9/mo jumps limits to 1,000 runs per day per tool and adds high-resolution output and queue skipping
- The upscaler goes up to x16 on Pro, well beyond the 2x or 4x many free upscalers offer
- The terms don't limit commercial use of images generated on ClipDrop
- A usage-based API and Photoshop plugins mean it fits into existing workflows instead of forcing a new one
Cons
- Ownership has moved from InitML to Stability to Jasper.ai in roughly a year, so the roadmap and long-term API terms are harder to predict
- Free limits are tight for real production work: 20 runs per 24 hours on most tools runs out fast on a product catalog
- The site doesn't say which model powers Text to image, so you can't easily compare it against Midjourney or DALL·E on paper
- Every tool is a separate page, so chaining edits like cleanup, relight and upscale means re-uploading and downloading between steps

Yes. The free plan includes HD background removal plus 20 runs per 24 hours on Cleanup, Relight and the 2x upscaler, and 50 daily text removals.
How much does ClipDrop Pro cost and what do you get?
Pro starts at $9/mo and raises each tool to 1,000 runs per 24 hours. It also adds high-resolution output, queue skipping and upscaling up to x16.
Who owns ClipDrop now?
ClipDrop was built by InitML, a Y Combinator Winter 2021 company, which Stability acquired in February 2023. Jasper.ai bought it in February 2024 and now runs the API.
Can I use ClipDrop images commercially?
Yes. ClipDrop's terms don't limit your ability to use images generated on the platform for commercial purposes, which is friendlier than some tools that gate commercial rights behind paid plans.
How does ClipDrop compare to Remove.bg for background removal?
Both handle background removal well, but ClipDrop bundles it with 8 other tools like Cleanup, Relight and Uncrop. Remove.bg is more focused, while ClipDrop gives you broader editing for a $9/mo Pro plan.
How ClipDrop compares
ClipDrop vs Remove.bg
Remove.bg is the simpler pick if you only ever need cutouts, but ClipDrop covers cleanup, relighting and upscaling too for a $9/mo Pro plan.
ClipDrop vs Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop's Generative Fill gives you far more control, but ClipDrop is faster for one-click jobs and even plugs into Photoshop if you want both.
ClipDrop vs Canva
Canva wins if you're building full layouts and templates, while ClipDrop is the sharper tool for fixing and prepping the photos that go into them.
