GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant developed by GitHub and OpenAI that integrates directly into popular code editors, including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, and Visual Studio. It works by analyzing the code and comments a developer is actively writing and generating inline suggestions in real time, completing everything from single lines to entire functions. Beyond autocomplete, Copilot includes a chat interface that lets developers ask questions about their codebase, request explanations of unfamiliar code, get help debugging, and generate tests or documentation without leaving their editor. The tool covers a wide range of developer workflows. It supports dozens of programming languages, with strongest performance in widely used ones like Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, and Ruby. Developers use it to accelerate boilerplate writing, explore unfamiliar APIs, refactor existing code, and reduce context-switching by keeping reference lookups inside the editor. A more recent addition is Copilot Workspace, an autonomous agent mode that can take a GitHub issue as input and work through planning, writing, and proposing code changes as a pull request, handling multi-step tasks with less manual intervention. Copilot also integrates with GitHub's pull request interface, offering code review suggestions directly in that workflow. GitHub Copilot is aimed primarily at professional software developers and engineering teams, though it is also used by students and hobbyist programmers. It operates on a subscription model with a free tier that provides a limited number of completions and chat interactions per month. Paid plans start at ten dollars per month for individuals and scale to higher-priced business and enterprise tiers that add features like policy controls, audit logs, and organization-wide management. Enterprise plans also unlock additional model options and deeper integration with internal codebases. It is one of the most widely adopted AI coding tools currently available.
