Kimi

Most people who try Kimi are coming from ChatGPT, and the difference shows up fast. ChatGPT is still a chat window first, with tools bolted on around it. Kimi, built by Beijing-based Moonshot AI, puts agents at the front. The input box literally says "Ask anything, or task an agent", and the product is organized around dedicated agents for slides, docs, spreadsheets, deep research, design and app building rather than one general assistant you have to coax into each job.

That structure is the real pitch. Kimi Sheets claims to produce actual Excel files with formulas, pivot tables and charts, not a pasted table you'll rebuild by hand. The Docs agent handles Word and PDF files and is aimed at long reports and contract review. Deep Research returns reports with charts and traceable citations in multiple output formats. The app builder lets you describe an idea, upload images or video, and publish a site in minutes without code. On top of that sits Agent Swarm, which splits complex, long-running tasks across multiple agents working in parallel. It's a more opinionated setup than ChatGPT's, and if your work maps to those output types, it's a shorter path to a finished file.

Under the hood, Kimi runs Moonshot's own model family: the new Kimi K3, plus K2.7 Code, K2.6 and K2.5, with an API and a separate Kimi Code product for developers. It's listed as free, with Kimi Enterprise and a finance-industry offering for teams. The catch is that the public pages are heavy on feature names and light on specifics. You won't find usage limits, file size caps or integration details on the features page, and some teams will want to think about data handling with a China-based provider. Treat it as a strong free option to test against your current assistant, not a drop-in you can evaluate from the marketing site alone.
