Knowt

Knowt works like a conversion pipeline for study material. You feed it a source: a lecture you record live, a long PDF, a slide deck, an image, or a YouTube video. Its AI turns that input into notes and study guides, then reformats the same content into active recall tools: flashcards, quizzes, games, and practice questions. Kai, the built-in AI voice tutor, can quiz you out loud on anything you upload or turn your material into a podcast you can listen to on the bus. The idea is that you upload once and get every study format from that single input, instead of copying notes into a separate flashcard app.

The flashcard layer is the part that pulled most of its users in. Knowt pitches itself as the "#1 Free Quizlet Alternative," and the free Basic plan backs that up: unlimited file creation, live collaboration, storage, and access to a library of 5 million resources, with "unlimited learn mode" on flashcards at no cost. The reviews on the homepage are full of Quizlet refugees who moved after Quizlet put more of its study features behind a paywall. On top of that, there's a dedicated AP, ACT, and SAT prep track with personalized schedules, mock exams, practice questions, and analytics. Knowt claims at least 700,000 of 1.3 million AP students used it for the May 2025 AP season, and 6.5 million users overall.

The catch is that the AI pipeline itself is the paid part. The PDF, video, image, and PowerPoint summarizers, the lecture recording summarizer, the podcast generator, Kai on all files, and full exam prep all sit in the Ultra plan. The free tier is generous if you mostly build and study flashcards, but if you came for the record-a-lecture-get-a-quiz workflow, you'll be paying. You'll also want to pick annual over monthly billing, since the per-month gap between the two plans is wide. It runs on the web at knowt.com plus iOS and Android apps, so you can record on your phone and study on your laptop.
