It's a voice mode built into OpenAI's ChatGPT that lets you talk directly to the same language model you'd normally type to. It processes your speech in real time and answers in synthesized speech with low latency. The result feels less like issuing commands and more like a phone call with someone who's read a lot.

The version worth your attention is Advanced Voice Mode, released in 2024. It picks up on emotional tone, lets you interrupt mid-sentence, and keeps the back-and-forth going without the awkward pauses of earlier voice implementations. That makes it useful for things a command-style assistant can't do well: rehearsing for an interview, practicing pronunciation in a new language, brainstorming out loud on a walk, or getting tutored through a concept you're stuck on. It's also a real accessibility win if typing is hard for you, and it's handy for quick answers while your hands are busy.

The catch is that it isn't a separate product. You need a ChatGPT account, and you'll use it through the ChatGPT mobile app or select browser interfaces at chatgpt.com. Standard voice is included on the free plan with limited voice chats, but Advanced Voice Mode, with its lower latency and richer conversation, sits behind ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo. Team and Enterprise plans include it too. If you already pay for Plus, this is a feature you already own, and it's worth making part of your routine. If you don't, it's one of the better reasons to upgrade.
