Most people's first text to speech tool is whatever came free with their device: the read-aloud button in Edge, the screen reader on an iPhone, the dictation key on a Mac. Those work, but they're flat, robotic and stuck inside one app or one operating system. Speechify's pitch is the opposite. It wants to be a voice layer that follows you across the web app, Chrome and Edge extensions, iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, with the same voices, the same library and the same assistant everywhere. If you've ever tried to listen to a 40-page PDF with a built-in reader, you'll get the appeal fast.

The core is still reading aloud. You can upload a PDF to the web app and have it read with what Speechify calls lifelike, emotional voices, pick from 1,000+ AI voices, follow along with text highlighting and push playback up to 4.5x speed. Scan & Listen lets you snap a photo of a printed page and hear it. On top of that, Speechify has bolted on a Voice AI Assistant that summarizes and answers questions about whatever you're listening to, plus AI Podcasts that turn a document or a description into a show. The newest piece is Voice Typing: the company claims dictation hits 160 words per minute versus 40 on a keyboard, and the Mac app says it works across Slack, Outlook, Cursor and every other app.

The social proof is loud. Speechify claims 60M+ users, a 2025 Apple Design Award, Chrome Extension of the Year, a 4.6 rating from 21k Chrome reviews and 4.7 from 435k App Store ratings. It's freemium, with paid plans starting at $11.58/mo. The tradeoff is focus. Speechify now also lists dubbing, voice over, a studio, captions, an API and a "Delegate Work to AI" product, so you're buying into a fast-expanding app, not a single sharp tool. If you just want the best reader for long documents, it's one of the strongest options. If you want a dedicated dictation tool, it's newer here and you should test it before committing.
